September 16 – October 10, 2024

Opening Reception September 22, 1 – 3 PM

10 North Main Street, Essex, CT

The Essex Art Association is pleased to present “Vivid!”, an exhibition featuring Gretchen Wohlgemuth, Phyllis Small, Lina Morielli, Ellen Gordon and Cynthia Cooper. These Connecticut artists share a passion for creating artwork that showcase their use of color. The exhibition runs from September 16th – October 10th, 2024.  The public is invited to join them for an artists’ reception on September 22nd from 1 – 3. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Sunday from 1 to 5 PM.

Gretchen Wohlgemuth is a mixed media artist who works with a variety of materials to produce bold, playful abstract works. Through layering – colors, marks, gestures, exploring shapes while building rhythmic pathways – she creates works that sit on the edge of the imagination and reality.

Phyllis Small is a fiber artist whose background in painting, collage, and printmaking has culminated in her inspirational quilts. With fabrics as her palette she conveys a meditative feeling of rhythm by use of repetition of color, shape, and line throughout her colorful works.

Lina Morielli is a mixed media artist whose recent paintings are subconsciously driven expressions that deal with how her creativity is influenced and directed by responses to both personal and world events.

Ellen Gordon’s work has evolved through many phases, but her main body of work centers on figurative collages - intimate yet colorful portrayals of a woman in her own thoughts, providing the viewer a window into honest moments with a series of striking and bold women.

Cynthia Cooper makes compelling paintings that reflect her interest in nature and her optimistic outlook. Her creations are imbued with light-drenched curves that burst outward in exuberant color, evoking feelings of optimism and transformation. Each piece is an invitation to experience the joy of discovering one's rightful place in the continuum of time.
